Maldives parliament in unexpected recess, resume uncertain

The local parliament - People's Majilis - while expected to resume sittings this week according to parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, is however still in its uncalled for recession.

Since the lifting of the much controversial 45-day state of emergency, no special committee meetings or any official parliament sittings have taken place.

While the inaction of parliament has been directed with aggressive remarks and lambaste from opposition activists and public, the parliamentary group leader of ruling party had asserted that parliament was not in recess over lack of work but due to the necessary support from opposition lawmakers in the deliberation and approval of current pending and planned bills.

According to parliament regulations, sittings must take place on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays unless its in official recession. No further sittings have been scheduled for any future dates and so far it is uncertain when the parliament will resume work.

So far only 11 sittings at the local parliament had taken place since the new term for 2018 commenced. The last sitting took place on March 14 to approve both amendments to Judges Act and Anti-Defection Law; another political scheming from ruling party to exert their control on local estates, according to opposition.
