The action against councilors taken by Local Government Authority (LGA) has been presented as a constitutional case to Maldives appellate court.
The case presented to Maldives high court by the Addu City's deputy mayor Mohamed Yashrif who had requested from the appellate court to investigate the LGA members who took action against councilors and to appropriately take legal action against these members.
Though submitted the constitutional case has not been accepted by high court as of now.
LGA had suspended a total of 21 councilors from eight different islands over public statements issued by these councils. The suspended members of the council had included both Addu City mayor Abdulla Sodiq and deputy mayor Yashrif along with councilors Jamsheedha Mohamed and Ali Fahmee.
The local government authority had suspended these councilors for a period of one month temporarily suspending their salaries and allowances as well. The councilors were also prohibited from attending their respective council premises and use documents and materials inside these venues on official or personal use.
Furthermore LGA had warned these councilors they would be removed from their designations as well as the council would be entirely dismissed should these members repeat such an offense.
LGA had issued suspension orders on these councilors following their official statements urging the Maldives government to respect Supreme Court's order on February 1 citing release of nine political prisoners and urged the state to comply with the court's order.
