MP trial over 'murder' in captivity allegation on Maldives Corrections

A prominent opposition aligned lawmakers harsh allegation of torture in local prisons has attracted serious backlash as the case has been pushed forth for prosecution by state.

Ahmed Mahloof, the south-Galolhu MP tweeted on March 20 claiming that the authorities were attempting to "murder prisoners" through restrictions of medical attention and other 'inhuman' practices.

The state pressed case against the lawmaker is tabled for 10:00hrs on Monday and he is being tried for spreading misinformation or faux news about a government authority.

In his tweet, Mahloof said that the authorities were 'murdering' prisoners by restricting or refusing proper healthcare or medical attention required by inmates and he added the demise of 10 prisoners inside the penitentiary was in fact a serious concern.

He had held the officials of Maldives Corrections Service responsible for his allegation of prisoner killing.

The opposition lawmaker has been once again slapped with a state pressed charge surmounting to an already heavy resume of allegations and prosecutions against him. Mahloof is currently in remand until another trial's conclusion; for the offense of hoarding in front of Maafushi penitentiary to instigate violence between commoners and authorities.

Mahloof had since been transferred to house arrest.
