Addu City honours man for saving drowning teen

Maldives' southernmost Atoll Addu City council has honoured the special needs man who risked his life to save a drowning teen in Hithadhoo island on Saturday.

Three teenage boys were out swimming when they were caught in a strong current. Hassan Didi - a mute was alerted to the cries for help by two women who were at the beach at the time. Didi had immediately jumped in but had only managed to save one of the boys while the other two were swept away to sea.

Addu Mayor Abdulla Sodig on Tuesday had presented a special award for Didi in recognition of his bravery.

Coastguard has been searching the area by air and sea for the missing boys aged 14 and 17 but they are yet to be found. But coastguard had found a t-shirt believed to be of one of the two teens was found late Saturday while a pair of shorts was also found on Monday.

Coastguard on Monday said more divers had been deployed in the search and vowed to use every resource available.
