Maldives parliament on Sunday has approved the proposed bill of expanding the health insurance plan subjected to government ministers and their families.
Following a weeks long unscheduled recess of the parliament, sitting resumed once again on Sunday as tabled. The proposed bill of health insurance plan expansion was voted in favor by 36 pro-government lawmakers present in sitting.
Much like any other recent parliament sitting the members affiliated to opposition parties took their stance of boycotting the proceedings; and repeated the same on Sunday as well.
The health insurance plan for ministers were subjected additionally to their spouses and children below the age 18. Earlier the health insurance plan for ministers reached MVR 19,000 monthly but it had been upped to MVR 24,000 through the approval of Sunday's preposition.
The increment to the health insurance plan came as a direct result of president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom making a request for such.
The preceding report which highlighted on the assessment made to identify viable reasons to expand the insurance plan had suggested the provider Allied Insurance initially sold the plan through a discounted rate but it had since hit significant setbacks.
Furthermore parliament's financial committee had decided to include National Integrity Commission (NIC) members including their respective family members under the government backed health insurance plan.
