Jailed May Day protester released on parole

One of the protesters sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a police officer during the May Day protest in 2015 was released on Sunday.

Ibrahim Laban Shareef who was Maldives' under 19 goalkeeper was released on parole after three years, his family said.

Several protesters and two police officers were injured during violent clashes on May 1. The police at the time released video footage showing protesters kicking and hitting a fallen riot police officer over the head with his own helmet and baton.

Laban was found guilty and convicted of tripping the officer before the other protesters beat up the fallen cop.
