All protestors released: Police

Maldives Police Service has said all arrested at the opposition's protest in Male' City on Sunday have been released.

The opposition took to the streets after the Criminal Court found their leader, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, guilty of money laundering and bribery and sentenced him to eleven years in jail. The protestors called for Yameen's release and the resignation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other government officials.

A police media official told AVAS that sixteen people were arrested in the protests. He said all sixteen people were released later the same night.

Due to the conviction, President Yameen will not be able to contest the upcoming presidential election until a higher court quashes the Criminal Court's sentence against him.
