Nine arrested in opposition's protests

Nine people were arrested at a protest staged by opposing Progressive Parity of Maldives (PPM) on Tuesday.

The opposition has been conducting serial protests for the past couple of weeks calling for the release of their jailed leader, Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. Yameen is currently serving a five-year sentence on money-laundering charges.

The police cordoned off several streets surrounding the PPM Office to block the protest. However, several protestors managed to hit the streets despite a large number of police in the area. The opposition said nine people were arrested during the protest, including two party council members and a member of its legal team.
