Prominent opposition lawmaker switches party, from MDP to JP

Prominent opposition lawmaker Ali Waheed; who lives at UK under self imposed exile has switched political parties; from MDP to Gasim Ibrahim founded Jumhoory Party.

The outspoken lawmaker had filled the chairperson responsibility of prime opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) before he fled the island nation immediately after he was released after MayDay incarceration.

Waheed resigned his chairperson seat after MDP formally identified former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom as an associate; and started working together as allies.

The lawmaker had tweeted his decision while wishing the best of luck to party leadership including founder and former president Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) and parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

"I'll take my leave for now. But our bond will never vanish," his quote on Twitter roughly translates.

Waheed had promised to meet the public via VTV - owned by the Jumhoory Party leader Gasim Ibrahim - at 21:30hrs. He had also shared a picture of him taken with the famed business tycoon and political leader.

Ali Waheed made his political presence felt alongside former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at the latter's first political party Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), however had switched sides to MDP after a fallout.

After switching to MDP, Waheed was seen on the party's front-lines working with its leadership and even held the chairperson designation of the party.
