Former Male' region commander gets release

Former Male' region commander Ahmed Fayaz (Papa) arrested for alleged involvement in the assassination plot against incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been released from jail after serving time.

Fayaz was alleged to have been involved in the bombing of president's speedboat and was later jailed for two convictions.

The former Male' region commander was found guilty for obstruction of justice and was sentenced two years in jail for the offense. Though the court had sentenced him in 2016, he was arrested for the speedboat bombing back in 2015.

Fayaz was also found guilty of obstructing the officer in-charge of the security detail of 'Finifenmaa'; the president's speedboat. He was sentenced 3 months and 18 days for being convicted of this offense.

Although he has been released after serving time, he is still under government imposed no-flying list. State has placed a travel ban on Fayaz after authorities had discovered unsanctioned weapons at Baa atoll Hin'balhidhoo; an island then developed as a resort.

Fayaz is charged with terrorism over the weapons' case. However the trial on the said case currently is on halt.
