Corrections 'unable' to provide special protection for ex-VP

Maldives Correctional Service has revealed former vice-president Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has not been listed under individuals subjected with special protection.

The authority made the statement in response to the former VP's family handing a letter requesting to provide special protection for Adeeb over cutting down on visiting hours and alleged discriminatory conduct towards him by the penitentiary.

In response to his family's request the authority replied to the former vice-president's wife Mariyam Nashwa stating he was not under the list of individuals considered for special protection and thus will not be subjected for it.

The one-time vice president according to Maldives Corrections will be subjected with a family visiting day once per month like other prisoners.

Adeeb currently is serving time at jail for the conviction of his direct involvement in the assassination plot against incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom; that had resulted in a bomb explosion on president's speedboat.

He is also alleged with embezzling state coffers through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) for personal motives.
