Court demands ex-Home Min settling phone bill 'debt'

Former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam during Mohamed Nasheed's administration has been ordered to settle his phone bill payment debt.

During his tenure as housing minister an approximate exceeding MVR300,000 on phone bills was spend from state funds according to court.

Civil Court ordered on Wednesday from Aslam to settle exactly MVR312,000 spent from state funds between June 2009 and August 2011.

The court sentence on June 24 found Aslam subjected to settle the amount, as it has been legally identified as debt. He was ordered to settle the outstanding amount within 5 months.

The issue came to light following 2010 audit report on Housing Ministry. Audit reports on government bodies revealed several cabinet ministers, senior officials had used state funds illicitly according to Finance Ministry.
