Elections Commission (EC) of Maldives has confirmed on Sunday a request at the commission has been filed for the inception of a new political party.
The Maldives electoral watchdog confirmed that a private entity has filed the request for a new political party's establishment, adding they will derive a conclusion within the current week.
Apart from the confirmation of the political party inception request EC had not disclosed further details regarding the matter.
The request for the establishment of a new political party has come at a time when the presidential elections in 2018 is drawing closer. The electoral watchdog will announce official window of contesting next week.
Earlier in April two separate entities had filed for party establishment requests. However both requests were dismissed over lack of necessary documents and conditions.
