Maldives military is on high alert after credible reports of an imminent threat to national security, defence minister Adam Shareef Umar said Saturday.

The defence minister in a post on his personal Facebook page said the military had received credible reports of an imminent plot to undermine the peace and security of the country.

He assured that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) together with the police were closely monitoring the situation.

"So anyone with information that could be a threat to national security should come forward and notify the police or the MNDF immediately," Shareef said adding that the military would do everything possible to safeguard the independence, sovereignty and the constitution of the country.

The minister's claims come with just over a month remaining for the crunch presidential elections slated for September 23.
