Tarmac installation at Noonu atoll Maafaru international airport has been completed.
The airport developed as an international flight venue is currently preparing for test flights.
Director General of Regional Airports Sami Ageel claimed the project was proceeding in a fast pace and expected full completion of the site by coming month of September.
"Tarmac installation completed on Friday. Now they [contractors] are placing the runway markings. We expect test flights will commence late next week," Ageel said.
The project is developed on a grant of USD60 million by Abu Dhabi. The completed airport will boast the capacity to hold landings from larger planes like Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s.
The runway at Maafaru airport is 2,200 meter long and 40 meter wide. The airport will also house a state-of-the-art terminal with a VIP lounge.
