Ferry sinks in Hulhule' lagoon after breakwater crash

A ferry carrying three passengers crashed atop the Hulhule' breakwater barrier on early Saturday morning, causing it to sink.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) confirms the ferry had crashed to the newly set breakwater barrier at Hulhule' island around 05:00hrs on Saturday morning. The vessel was carrying three passengers as reported and crew members at the time of the accident.

MNDF information officer Captain Ibrahim Azim confirmed that though the accident had resulted in the ferry to sunk completely the people on board have been rescued and they had not sustained any visible injuries.

Though the ferry was pushed into Hulhule' lagoon after its crash, the significant damage to its hull had been the main reason behind it sinking into the airport island's lagoon afterwards.
