EC vote form rejects include more MDP members; party claims

Opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Friday has said the rejected re-registration applications from Elections Commission include comparatively higher numbers of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members than any other.

While addressing the public of Raa atoll Un'goofaaru, Solih said from the rejected applications members belonging to his party were highest in number. He also said that individual re-registration applications presented by the party members were mostly rejected by EC.

"MP Ameeth's wife presented her re-registration application to cast vote at Malaysia, my mother re-registered to vote from Lanka. The re-registration approval chit was given to her on August 15 but now they [EC] are saying her application too, has been rejected," Solih said.

Furthermore the opposition presidential candidate also accused of the Maldives electoral watchdog working in cahoots with ruling party, stating re-registration application details were forwarded to president Abdulla Yameen.

Solih also claimed the ruling party was phoning individuals who had re-registered, asking them their reason for re-registration as well as their vote casting choice.

A leaked phone call further strengthens Solih's comments. The leaked phone call reveals a ruling party campaign activist calling a local asking for the reason for re-registering at Lanka's poll station.

Upon the recipient's inquiry about how such classified information was disclosed to Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the activist remarked that the party 'had ways.'

Elections Commission has announced to re-register before August 29.
