Pres Yameen's re-election assures retaining Maldives freedom, says running-mate

Ruling party running-mate Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on Friday claimed the preservation of Maldivian freedom can only be achieved through the re-election of incumbent president Abdulla Yameen for a second term.

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) backed running-mate's comments follow in response to India's BJP member of parliament Subramanian Swamy's remarks of possibly 'invading' Maldives if the results of presidential election are colluded.

Swamy made the statement via a tweet informing of his meeting with former president Mohamed Nasheed at Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

While opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been silent in addressing to Swamy's comments, the Indian lawmaker's remarks were condemned by Solih's running-mate Faisal Naseem on Friday.
