Pres Yameen challenges audit report results, assures necessary action

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Saturday has assured he will not be tossed into intimidation over audit reports of government institutes; added necessary action will be taken on anyone guilty of fraud.

While addressing the public of Laamu atoll Fonadhoo on Saturday evening, president Yameen recalled the 2008 presidential elections.

The island nation's head of state recollected former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's perception of audit reports on government institutes, he voiced during then presidential polls.

"Audit report reflected the corruption and scandalous activities of then government institutes, the report was compiled on MDP's (Maldivian Democratic Party) request," president Yameen said, noting ex-president Gayoom's defeat in 2008 elections came at the hands of audit reports which showed several misconduct on executive level.

President Abdulla Yameen claimed he had requested from current Auditor General to release the audit reports of all major government institutes reflecting audits until 2017.

In his speech, president Yameen stressed he will not hesitate in taking any executive level decision or legal action against any institute or individual guilty of corruption.
