Bad weather forces Nasheed to postpone visit to Maldives' south

Former president Mohamed Nasheed has postponed his scheduled visit to the southernmost Atoll Addu City due to bad weather, his party said Friday.

Nasheed who returned to the country after three years in exile on Thursday was scheduled to visit Addu on Saturday.

However, as Addu has been experiencing continued bad weather Nasheed's visit has been postponed to next Friday, a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) official told AVAS.

Relentless rain in the south has caused severe flooding in the region with dozens of houses suffering flood damage.

Thousands flooded the main roads in the capital Male to greet former president Mohamed Nasheed who returned to the Maldives after spending three years in self-imposed exile.

Nasheed had lived in self imposed exile most recently in Sri Lanka after he was allowed to leave to the UK on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal in 2015 following his jailing on terrorism charges.

He was sentenced to 13 years in prison over the arbitrary arrest and subsequent detention of a sitting judge while he was president.
