Court frees two suspected terrorists from custody

Criminal Court on Sunday freed two suspected terrorists who had been charged with planning to carry out suicide attacks in the capital Male from custody.

The two suspects identified as Ishaag Ali and Hussain Afeef had been arrested in September last year before they were both formally charged in November 2017.

Ali had been charged with planning to carry out a terrorist attack while Afeef is facing charges of intention to execute a terrorist attack.

During the preliminary hearing on Sunday saying that the prosecution had not presented sufficient grounds to keep the suspects in custody. The judge had also pointed out that the two suspected had been ill-treated in custody.

The prosecution had presented two more audio analysis reports against the suspects.

AVAS understands that the duo are linked to the extremist group Islamic State and had been planning to carry out suicide attacks in the capital.

Government has looked to take measures to curb the rising extremist ideologies in the island nation with the parliament in August passed a national policy on terrorism.
