President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday reaffirmed his government's commitment to re-establishing a decentralized governance system in the archipelago.
During his visit to Alif Alif Atoll Ukulhas island, president Solih pointed out that the decentralisation system of governance was introduced by the new constitution in the effort to empower the councils.
He also noted that the government has already begun to deliver on its pledge, by reinstating the local councils’ original powers and responsibilities.
President reiterated that government does not advocate for all responsibilities and powers to be centralised to the executive government.
"The only way to develop our country is to establish a strong decentralised system of governance," he said.
President Solih also appealed to all councils to work closely with the people in delivering their services.
