Maldives capital suspends construction permits after cement bag incident

Authorities have enforced a city wide suspension on construction after a falling cement bag left a nine old year old in critical condition in the capital Male, city council said Sunday.

Male deputy mayor Shamaau Shareef told AVAS that the incident occurred after the council had already scheduled sit-downs with local contractors to discuss building and construction safety.

According to Shamaau, the authorities have now temporarily suspended construction in the capital Male following the tragic incident.

Contractors have been asked not to resume construction in any of the buildings in the capital without permission from the city council, he explained.

"Immediately after we received the news of the incident, we've temporarily suspended all construction permits in Male. Construction can only resume after we re-issue the permits," Shamaau said.

CCTV footage from a nearby building showed the girl walking just ahead of what appears to be her nanny before a bag of cement falls on top of her head.

The girl appears to be unconscious before a bystander picks her up and hoists her over his shoulder before rushing away.
