Insecticide leak causes Health Ministry and Majeediya evacuation

A Health Ministry building and a nearby school have been vacated due to leakage of mosquito-repellent insecticide inside the Ministry.

The leakage spread through the building on Tuesday afternoon during work hours from mosquito repellents stored in an air-vent of the building.

Two women have been taken to the hospital after falling unconscious on exposure to the gas.

The building, as well as a nearby school has now been vacated due to the leakage.

Food and Drug Authority, Health Protection Agency, and the Maldives office of World Health Organization are located in the building.

The insecticide used in the mosquito fogging is a synthetic pyrethroid that is very similar to the insecticides used in most domestic insect spray cans that are found on supermarket shelves. The insecticide in the fog is not harmful to human at the low concentrations.
