Police requests family of deceased detainee for autopsy

Maldives Police Services (MPS) have requested the family of the woman who passed away while in police custody for permission to perform an autopsy on her body.

A 23-year old woman who was being held in Dhoonidhoo Jail in connection to a mugging, passed away earlier on Tuesday. In a statement released by the police following her death, the police informed that the case has been forwarded to both the National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) for investigation. The family of the deceased have been approached for permission to conduct an autopsy on her body, revealed the police.

In their statement, the police said all the rights of the detainee were assured during her time in detention, and all required services had been provided by the police. The woman was also taken to the doctor twice during her time in detention.
