EC registers labour party

Elections Commission (EC) on Monday officially registered new political party, 'Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party'.

The party becomes the eighth registered political party in the Maldives.

The party register was handed over to party lawyer, Abdulla Haseen at a ceremony held at the Elections Commission.

Speaking at the ceremony, Haseen said the party was established in order to bring about positive changes to the political arena of the country, and to advocate for the rights of labourers. He further revealed that representatives from the party will be contesting in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for April, although the target constituencies are still undecided.

The leadership committee of the party will comprise of 15 members, which includes a committee chair and vice chair who will be elected bi-annually. The labour party will have no party leader or president.

The party was initially requested to be registered as Maldives Labour and Social Justice, however, the Elections Commission had not approved of the proposed name. The amended title was accepted and the inaugural congress of the party was held on 11th of this month.
