Adeeb's advocates make allegations against Home Minister

Lawyer of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb stated on Tuesday that Adeeb is being held in jail unconstitutionally.

In a press conference, lawyer Ismail Mohamed said Adeeb is being treated inhumanely in jail, while revealing that the ex-VP's case has been submitted at higher courts. However, no hearings have been held to date regarding the case.

Adheeb had undergone emergency surgery last November before he spent a month under house arrest due to ailing health.

Ismail criticized and condemned Home Minister Sheikh Imran Mohamed for transferring Adeeb from home arrest back to prison after deeming the period recommended by doctors to keep Adeeb under house arrest as expired.

Noting that the Minister himself had been in jail not too long ago and had made several visits between the hospital and jail during his imprisonement, Ismail said it is deeply saddening that Imran turned his back on Adeeb while knowing what he is put through.

Home Minister Imran was sentenced to 12 years in prison for inciting violence during a major opposition protest held in May 2015. However, he was acquitted in the wake of the opposition alliance's stunning victory in September's presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Adeeb is serving 33 years in prison over two counts of terrorism and corruption including the blast aboard the presidential speedboat which has been now confirmed as a plot to assassinate president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

He is also facing multiple counts of terrorism and graft charges including a second assassination plot involving a Sri Lankan sniper.

Adeeb's wife Maryam Nashwa also spoke at the press conference and alleged that Minister Imran is impeding Adeeb's treatment. She believes appropriate treatment options should be arranged for Adeeb by the government and Home Ministry.

Nashwa challenged the Home Minister to reveal the reason for the 'personal gruge' that the minister is allegedly harboring towards Adeeb, as the minister himself had advocated for Adeeb's rights after he was released from jail. In the recent past, Home Minister had stated that Adeeb was treated very inhumanely in jail, and the current government, which Imran is part of, is no different, said Nashwa.
