Nasheed slams Criminal Court over Suood case

Former president Mohamed Nasheed stated on Wednesday that commissioner Husnu-Al-Suood, who heads the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances cannot be charged without the involvement of the Prosecutor General.

The Criminal Court has decided to look into a case involving the commissioner, after he alleged on 30th December that gangs and businessmen exert undue influence on Criminal Court judges. The integrity of Criminal Court judges are compromised by bribes and other incentives, claimed Suood.

In a Tweet, Nasheed stated that Suood cannot be investigated by any court of the Maldives unless the Prosecutor General's Office or the State files charges at the courts.

Suood was summoned to the Criminal Court for a hearing on Tuesday, although it was later cancelled.

Both the Judicial Service Commission and the The Supreme Court have launched investigations into Suood's claims.

Judicial Sevice Commission previously expressed their concern at the presidential commission's decision to make huge allegations against the judiciary that can be held in contempt of court. The JSC said it is within their mandate to investigate Suood's claims and take due action where necessary, being the highest judicial authority of Maldives.
