Football Association of Maldives (FAM) made serious allegations against Minister of Youth and Sports Ahmed Mahloof on Friday.
In a post published on social media platform Twitter, FAM accused the minister of attempting to change the elected leadership of the association by misusing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's name to threaten local football clubs of cutting off their company funding.
The Minister retaliated to the accusation stating that the association was politicized in the past two years, and had made decisions that negatively impacted Maldivian football. He went on to reveal that the majority football clubs of Maldives are organizing an extraordinary congress in a bid to change the leadership of the association, as the present incumbent has violated association charters.
President of FAM, Bassam Adeel Jaleel has previously hinted at a power struggle to change the association leadership. At the FAM Football Awards, Bassam had urged all those interested in a leadership position to prepare for the elections which is two years away.
Minister Mahloof had recently established a fact-finding committee after Maldivian clubs were not given opportunity to participate in this year's AFC Cup, which resulted in disputes between the minister and FAM.
