Govt to establish justice for wronged councilors

The government is reviewing all action taken against island councilors by the former government.

Home Minister and President of the Local Governance Authority (LGA), Sheikh Imran Abdulla revealed on Monday that the government is currently reviewing all cases and assured that justice will be established at the earliest.

"President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government will not take action against councilors fueled by political motives", promised the Home Minister.

The government of former president Yameen Abdul Gayyoom suspended several councilors for taking part in anti-government political activities and criticizing the government. Many councilors were suspended several times with no pay.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has previously pledged to empower island and atoll councils as well as establish an efficient decentralized governance system.
