MTD opens submission for party ticket

Newly established political party, Maldives Third-way Democrats (MTD) has started accepting applications of those wishing to contest April's parliamentary polls backed by the party.

Vice President of MTD, Yameen Rasheed revealed to AVAS on Saturday that the party will be accepting applications from 1st February until 9th February.

Yameen further said there are no restrictions on the constituencies a candidate can apply for, noting that all candidates will be chosen after careful evaluation by the party's council.

The party hugely backed by jailed former vice president Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor was registered in December. Adeeb was the first member to sign up for the party while he was under house arrest following a surgery. The party had later revealed that Adeeb is the president of the party, although the Elections Commission declined to endorse the appointment citing that an individual serving a prison sentence is prohibited from filling in positions of political parties.

Former Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) loyalist, MP Yameen Rasheed who had transferred to MTD following its establishment revealed on Sunday that he will be contesting for Maduvvary constituency in the parliamentary polls slated for April, if approved for a MTD ticket. He is the current MP for Velidhoo constituency.
