Education Ministry has announced that ten new schools will be introduced in capital Male', reclaimed suburbs Hulhumale' and Villingili ward.
The schools are being established in order to allow for schools to have single-sessions instead of two.
A report of the audit conducted to identify the feasibility of establishing single session schools was presented on Monday, according to which 288 classrooms are necessary to make the transition to single-sessions. 10 additional schools, 47 science labs, 28 libraries, 42 audio-visual rooms, 22 staff rooms and 57 kitchens are also needed.
At the ceremony held to present the findings of the audit report at Muhyiddin School, Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali said the decision to establish 10 new schools in the Male' region was prompted due to the absence of the necessary facilities to establish single-sessions at schools.
The new schools will follow the same design concept of other international schools that follow a single-session system, said the Minister, and the work will be phased over five years.
According to the audit report, single-sessions will be established in schools in Male' region where 800 to 1000 students are enrolled. However, over 1500-2000 students are enrolled in 13 schools in Male'.
