Maldives ex-pres worth over MVR five mill.

Publicized financial statements of candidates contesting in the parliamentary election on main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket has revealed that former president Mohamed Nasheed has over MVR five million in his bank account.

While financial statements of 80 out of 87 candidates have been publicized thus far, party president and MDP candidate for Macchangolhi central constituency Mohamed Nasheed declared to have over MVR 5 million in four different accounts: Maldives Islamic Bank, Bank of Maldives, State Bank of India and Lloyd's Bank of London, UK.

The former president received MVR 100,000 as the only income during 2018. The source of the income is the allowance granted by the government for past presidents. According to his statement, Nasheed did not receive any income as business profit, rent, shares or dividends.

Nasheed owns a 4700 sqft property in Gan island of Laamu atoll as well as a 2000sqft land in Thulusdhoo island of Kaafu atoll, jointly owned by Nasheed and three of his family members.

MDP earlier requested all candidates competing in the parliamentary polls to submit their financial details, which has now been uploaded on the MDP website.
