Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has established a 24-hour service team in a bid to seek a solution to the issues faced by the sewerage system of the Maldives.
In a press conference held on Thursday to inform the public regarding the ongoing and future projects by MWSC, Managing Director Adam Azim said the water and sewerage system had been neglected in the past four years. While new initiatives have been undertaken to reform the system, the 24-hour service team has now begun operations, said Azim.
"Our target is to establish more teams and clean the whole network bi-annually", said Azim.
In the event of sewage backups in local homes, the utility company will duly attend to the issues and provide a prompt solution, added Azim.
Speaking on the initial design of the sewerage system, Deputy Business Development Manager Mohamed Sameer revealed that the sewerage system of capital Male' was designed to cater to a population of 80,000 people, therefore, there are difficulties in providing an efficient service to the public as the population has now hiked up to 200,000.
With the new upgrades to the sewerage system, MWSC is confident that issues with pooling of water in different areas and leakage of waste to the streets will be solved.
