Features of a coalition no longer exist, claims ex-pres

Former president Mohamed Nasheed has stated there are no signs that the coalition which saw them win the presidential elections in November last year still exists.

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s leader made his statement while speaking at a campaign event for one of their candidates on Thursday night.

Nasheed highly condemned the current happenings at the parliament, where two important bills on granting powers to the presidential commissions on suspicious deaths and enforced disappearances and corruption have failed to be passed over several attempts due to insufficient quorum.

Earlier on Wednesday, Speaker of the parliament Gasim Ibrahim had halted proceedings of the two bills citing complaints received from committee members claiming discrepancies between the report issued on the bills and what was initially concluded by the committee.

In his address, Nasheed further noted that the pledge made by the coalition before the government was elected was the promise to eliminate corruption and holding those who commit acts of thievery accountable.

As some coalition members now refuse to vote for the bills advocating for the same pledges, it is important to ensure that MD is able to attain the parliament majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections, pointed out Nasheed.

"We have to establish justice for the Maldivian people. We have to reform the Maldivian judiciary. The biggest concern voiced by the people are the issues with the judiciary, they [understand] that the current principles cannot bring about a positive change. This is clear to the Maldivian people", said Nasheed.
