Ex-pres taken back to IGMH hours after discharge

Former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has been hospitalised at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) once again.

After being admitted at state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male' for two days due to a heart condition, he was released at 9 am on Thursday morning and taken back to Maafushi Jail. He has again been brought back to IGMH the same evening, less than 24 hours after he was released from the hospital.

President Yameen is being held under state custody until the end of his money-laundering trial. The Prosecutor General requested the Criminal Court to take Yameen into custody to deny him the chance to influence the evidence against him. The arrest has since been appealed at the High Court by President Yameen.

Prior to his arrest, the former president had implored not to keep him under state custody due to his medical conditions. President Yameen during the hearing said he had back problems which causes him pain. Male'.
