'Agenda 19' based on past experiences, says ex-pres

Former president Mohamed Nasheed has stated that main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s new policy "Agenda 19" is based on the experiences of the previous MDP government.

Speaking at a campaign event in Inguraidhoo island of Raa atoll, the leader of MDP said Agenda 19 is a framework of what the 19th parliament's agenda should include. Through the agenda, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's pledges will be fulfilled by members of MDP, said Nasheed.

The former president is confident that the pledges can be achieved as MDP members posses the talent, capability, education, upbringing, discipline and integrity necessary to do the job, he added.

"This party is governing the country for the second time now. Agenda 19 is comprised from our previous experiences [in governing the country], what we witnessed after that, and what should happen next. This is what Agenda 19 is based on", said Nasheed.

Speaking further, Nasheed said MDP would no longer promise to establish water and sewerage systems in islands, as such basic necessities should be fulfilled by the government without condition. Water and sewerage systems will be established by the ruling government in all islands within the year, promised Nasheed.

Noting that Maldives is a rich nation, Nasheed said Agenda 19 aims to ease the lifestyle of the country's citizens by utilizing the country's income. Jobs will be assured for all citizens, and those seeking employment will be given an allowance while maintaining written records until a job is secured. A minimum wage will also be decided, said Nasheed.
