EU commends Maldives for peaceful conduct of election

European Union (EU) has commended the Maldives for conducting a peaceful and democratic parliamentary election on April 6.

In a statement released jointly with the embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Romania and the UK, the EU praised the role played by the Elections Commission to ensure a smooth conduct during Saturday's election.

The EU also acknowledged President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's assurance that he would work together with all to fulfill the government's pledges to the people.

"As steadfast friends of the Maldives, we look forward to supporting the country's efforts towards reform", read the statement further.

According to the preliminary results of the election, main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party has secured super majority of the parliament in a landslide victory. MDP is projected to win over 60 seats in the parliament.
