Parliament committee to summon CSC members for questioning

Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions are summoning the members of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) over allegations that unqualified personnel are being employed for government positions.

While the Civil Service Regulations state that the best educated applicant should be given priority in hiring new employees, reports that unqualified people are being hired for government positions were brought to the attention of the committee by opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). The members of CSC are therefore being summoned for questioning over the allegations.

Speaking at today's committee meeting on the petition signed and submitted by three members of PPM, members from main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said CSC had ignored reports of civil servants being forced into doing political work as part of their jobs. The government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih would not pressure or influence any government employees in any way, said the members.

"We have no objections to summoning the members of the Civil Service Commission for questioning", said MP for Maafannu Uthuru constituency Imthiyaz Fahmy.

After discussion, the committee came to the decision to summon CSC members. The committee also passed to conclude all pending works by the end of the month at Tuesday's committee meeting.
