The Parliament on Monday approved the appointment of four members to the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
41 members applied for CSC membership when the President’s Office opened the application for four membership posts at CSC. The applicants were assessed by the Parliament’s committee on Independent Institutions, after which 15 names were forwarded to the Parliament floor. The chair of the committee, MP Rozaina Adam said such a large number of names were forwarded to the parliament floor as all 15 individuals were highly qualified for the post.
However, the four names that were approved by the parliament were names for which main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds parliament majority, had issued a whip line for. All members who took in the vote voted in favour of appointing Fathmath Shareef, Ibrahim Rasheed, Mohamed Nasih and Mohamed Farusath for CSC membership.
Four seats on the commission became vacant when members Dr. Ali Shameem, Shaheed Mohamed and Zakariyya Hussain resigned from the commission. The three members resigned amid impeachment motions at the Parliament. Member Ibrahim Shaheeq was later removed from position through a parliamentary vote.
