Islamic Ministry to begin accepting Zakat payments on May 7

Ministry of Islamic Affairs will begin accepting Zakat-al-Fitr from 7th May, the Ministry announced on Sunday.

An announcement issued by the ministry said Zakat payments can be made at the ministry and select locations on government working days from 09:15 am to 01:00 pm

Zakat payments can be made at City Council’s Villimale’ Unit while the Community Center in Hulhumale’ will be accepting Zakat payments in the reclaimed suburbs. Arrangements for Zakat payments will be made by the island councils in all inhabited islands across Maldives, said the statement.

Zakat Al-Fitr is an obligation upon every Muslims that has to be completed in the assigned time. This is a generous practice of Islam which connects the rich with the poor, and the poor with the poorer, thus eliminating poverty and reducing the disparity gap between the rich and the poor.

The amount for Zakat that has to be paid per individual is money worth 2.4 kg of the type of rice grain used by the person. This is approximately MVR 15 for those who use normal rice grains, MVR 45 for those who consume Thailand white rice grains, and MVR 95 for those who use Basmati Rice. While red rice is equivalent to MVR 75, normal flour is equivalent to MVR 15 and Atta flour is worth MVR 60.
