Remand of bus driver extended by seven days

The remand of the driver of the bus that fatally ran over a Ukrainian tourist on Monday has been extended for a second time.

While the Criminal Court remanded him for three days on Tuesday, the court extended his remand by another seven days on Thursday.

The 31-year old woman died in Hulhumale' City after being run over by the bus when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. It is believed that the accident occurred when the driver lost control of the bus when the bus conductor woke him up after he drifted off at the wheel.

The driver involved in the deadly crash has been working as a driver at MTCC for two consecutive years.

The remains of the victim has now been handed over to her family. The family is working with the Ukrainian Embassy in India to obtain the necessary permits to take her body back to Ukraine while MTCC is bearing all the costs of transporting the body back to her country. The body is being kept at the mortuary in capital Male' until all arrangements are finalized.
