Minister Shahid discusses situation in Sri Lanka with counterpart

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has discussed the current situation of Sri Lanka and its effects on Maldivian residents in the neighboring nation with his Sri Lankan counterpart.

The discussion between Minister Shahid and the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana took place via telephone, and the comments recently made by Sri Lankan Army Chief to an Indian media regarding Maldives was conferred about. The issues faced by Maldivian residents in Sri Lanka were also discussed.

During the talk, Minister Shahid requested the Sri Lankan authorities to take steps that would assure the safety of Maldivians in Sri Lanka, and discussed ways to tackle the current challenges faced by Maldivians in the country in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks that took place in Sri Lanka last month.

Acknowledging that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had sent a special envoy to Sri Lanka after the attacks, the Sri Lankan foreign Minister conveyed his thank to the Maldivian President. He also noted that the first foreign diplomat to visit Sri Lanka after the attacks was the Maldivian Foreign Minister.
