Indian PM Modi set to visit Maldives after re-election win

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the Maldives next month during his first trip abroad after his landslide victory in the Indian general elections.

It has been reported that Maldives would be the Indian PM’s first stop during diplomatic visits to countries in the South Asian region scheduled for June.

However, the President’s Office stated that they have not been officially informed of a visit by the Indian Foreign Ministry.

Last November, PM Modi visited Maldives for the first time for the swearing-in ceremony of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

President Solih and former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom sent messages of congratulations to the PM on his successful re-election bid.

While early election results confirm that 542 parliamentarians have been elected to the 'Lok Sabha', the Lower House of India's bicameral Parliament, Modi’s BJP is in the lead with over 300 seats. Opposing Indian National Congress (INC) is projected to win around 100 seats.
