Opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has paid the funds owed to national carrier Maldivian.
PPM racked up a bill of MVR 4.8 mln by buying seats and chartering flights during the 2018 presidential election. While MVR one million was paid off, delay in settling the remainder prompted Maldivian to file a lawsuit against PPM.
Maldivian has confirmed that the debt was settled by PPM on Tuesday.
The political party funds allocated to PPM from the 2018 National Budget was earlier withheld by the Elections Commission due to an ongoing case regarding party ownership. The funds, which amounts to MVR 8.6 million, were released to the party this month after the Elections Commission requested Finance Ministry to issue the payment.
PPM has been reiterating that all pending debts will be settled once the funds owed by the state are released.
