Speaker of the Parliament and former president Mohamed Nasheed has been appointed as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The Speaker of the Parliament is appointed as a member of the JSC by default. During the first sitting of the 19th Parliament held on Tuesday night, Nasheed was elected as the Speaker with 67 out of 85 votes in his favor. His opponent, Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim, who most recently headed the 18th Parliament as Speaker received 17 votes, and one vote was declared as void.
Replacing Gasim in JSC, Nasheed was handed over his letter of appointment in a ceremony held at the President’s Office following the parliament sitting. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi in the presence of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
President Solih met with the new parliament Speaker on Tuesday night, and conveyed his congratulations to the former president.
During the meeting, President Solih stated that the new parliament represents the hopes of the Maldivian people, and expressed his confidence that the parliament would work efficiently with integrity and fairness under the leadership of the Speaker. The President further assured that the government would extend assistance and full cooperation to the Parliament.
Speaking at the meeting, Nasheed said he would work with the parliament members to ensure that the parliament functions smoothly and fairly. Nasheed also pledged his support to the government in carrying out work in the best interest of the nation.
