Drug trafficking suspects arrested third time; police claims to have followed procedure

The two individuals who were arrested and released twice on drug trafficking suspicions have been arrested a third time.

The mother and son were arrested by the police under a court order issued by Hulhumale' Magistrate Court.

The duo was first arrested on this Monday under a court order from the same court. However, when presented at the Criminal Court to decide on their remand, the court released them due to procedural errors in issuing the court orders to arrest them. While the name of the approving judge was not written on the arrest warrant, criminal procedural laws state that the name of the judge must be written on the document for its validity.

Upon the suspects being released by the Criminal Court, the police again arrested the 52 year old woman and the 25 year old man and took them to Hulhumale' Court to decide on their remand. However, they were again released due to incomplete procedures by the police.

While both the Criminal Court and Hulhumale' Court have blamed the release of the suspects on the negligence of the police in handling the case, the police claim that they followed procedure in dealing with the case. However, Criminal Court on Wednesday night stated that the course of action taken by the police is questionable, alleging that the police acted against the order of justice.

Instead of appealing the Criminal Court order that released the suspects at the High Court, the police had proceeded to seek a new arrest warrant and taken the suspects to Hulhumale' Court to extend their remand, which prompted the courts to criticize the actions of the police.
