Speaker briefs PG leaders on PM Modi's special address at parliament

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has met with parliamentary group leaders regarding the special parliamentary sitting where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the parliament.

The meeting was attended by representatives from all political parties represented in the parliament, with Ahmed Siyam representing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Adam Shareef Umar on behalf of Peoples’ National Congress (PNC), Deputy Leader Mohamed Nazim from Jumhooree Party and PG leader Ahmed Siyam from Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)

During the meeting, the Speaker briefed the agenda of Saturday’s special sitting. The sitting will commence after Maqrib prayers, Modi is scheduled to address the parliament at 1845hrs. While some members of the opposition has expressed concerned at the unconventional timing of the sitting as it falls between two Islamic prayer calls, the parliament has since revealed that the sitting was scheduled for after Maqrib prayers as PM Modi wished to allow enough time for attendees to perform their Maqrib prayers before the sitting commenced.

The archipelago is currently preparing for the Indian Prime Minister's much anticipated arrival on June 8 - his first trip abroad after his astounding victory in the Indian general elections last month securing a second term as the PM.
