Parliament appoints members to two committees

Appointments have been made to the Clemency Board and the Oversight Committee to Combat Human Trafficking.

Ihavandhoo MP Ahmed Shifau was appointed to the Clemency Board established under the laws on pardoning and granting leniency to convicts, with the approval of all 81 members present at Monday's parliamentary sitting.

Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood was appointed to the Oversight Committee established under Anti-Human Trafficking laws, also with the full approval of all 81 members who took part in the vote.

Although no lawmakers spoke during the debate stage for nominating names for the clemency board, some opposing members directed verbal comments when MP Jeehan's name was nominated for the Oversight Committee.

While Jeehan is related to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir had claimed that a 'family reign' is being witnessed within the parliament. Jeehan was elected to the Hinnavaru seat which was occupied by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for 25 years until he became president.

Jeehan was previously a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). MPs representing main-ruling MDP had noted during the debate hat Jeehan has contributed a lot towards advocating for human rights.
