The documentation required to rejoin the Commonwealth were officially presented by the Maldivian government to the Commonwealth on Wednesday.
The documents were handed over to the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Patricia Scotland by Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid at the Maldivian Embassy in the United Kingdom.
The Maldives was a member of the Commonwealth for 34 consecutive years since 1982, before leaving the organization in 2016 during former president, Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's tenure. President Yameen had accused the Commonwealth of interfering and attempting to influence the internal affairs of the Maldives.
Due to the archipelago's renewed interest in joining the Commonwealth, a team from the association visited the Maldives earlier this year to assess the current situation of the Maldives. A team of observers from the Commonwealth also took part in monitoring April's parliamentary election.
